AMHERST, Mass. - All-American and MLL Champion Doc Schneider has been named a men's lacrosse assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Massachusetts. Schneider had a decorated career as a goalie under UMass head coach Greg Cannella for the past four seasons.

"We are thrilled that Doc is a part of our staff," said Cannella, who enters his 16th season as the head coach of the Minutemen. "Doc is a UMass guy through and through. He had an unbelievable playing career here and we know that will translate into success as a coach. Doc is a great leader and very passionate person. He worked with us as a volunteer coach in the fall and really did a great job working with the goalies and the defense."

Schneider was named a USILA Second-Team All-American after the 2009 season and played in the North-South All-Star Game. He was honored as the ECAC Goalie of the Year and ECAC First-Team goalie along with being named to the All-New England team for the fourth year in a row. He was named the UMass Male Athlete of the Year for 2009.

He was a national finalist for the Tewaaraton Award as the top player in college lacrosse this season. He was also a six-time ECAC Player of the Week and NEILA Scholar All-American as well as a first-team Jewish All-American.

The Massapequa, N.Y., native had his most outstanding statistical season as a senior captain, posting a 7.43 GAA and .653 save percentage (eighth in program history). He finished his career second in UMass history with 753 career saves. Schneider's 205 saves in 2009 stand as eighth-most in a single season, 15 behind his 220 saves in 2006 (fourth all-time) as part of the National Finalist Team.

After his senior season at UMass, Schneider was the highest-drafted goalie in Major League Lacrosse, by the Toronto Nationals and played a key role in the Nats winning the MLL Championship. Along with fellow UMass alum attackman Jeff Zywicki, the Nationals won the 2009 title in August, 10-9 over top-seeded Denver. Schneider started the championship game and made 12 saves. He also picked up the Nationals' MLL Semifinal victory playing all 60 minutes in a win over Long Island 

Overall, he played in eight games with the Nationals making 90 saves.

AMHERST, Mass. - Coming off an ECAC Championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament, the UMass men's lacrosse team is ranked No. 18 in the Inside Lacrosse Preseason poll released in Face-Off Magazine. The Minutemen will be led by senior Diogo Godoi, who was named a Preseason Second-Team All-American.

The Minutemen, who move from the ECAC to the CAA this season, are given this skinny by IL: Graduation hit the Minutemen hard, with four of the top six scorers gone, along with four-year starting goalie Doc Schneider. A young core features All-New England selections Diogo Godoi and Bobby Hayes along with sophomore attackerArt Kell.

UMass faces nine teams in the preseason Top 25: #10 Hofstra, #11 Harvard, #13 Georgetown, #15 Brown, #20 Albany, #21 Ohio State, #23 Penn State, #24 Drexel and #25 Villanova.

UMass opens the 2010 season against Sacred Heart on Friday, Feb. 12 in Fairfield, Conn., at 3 p.m.

Godoi was an Honorable Mention USILA All-American last season. He will return for his senior year with numerous honors as has been also named an All-ECAC First Team defender and an All-New England pick. He anchored a UMass defense that finished the season 11th nationally in fewest goals allowed (7.93). He shut down the opponent's top scorer on numerous occasions, including in the NCAA Tournament contest at Princeton when he held the Tigers' top scorer Jack McBride (a Second-Team All-American) pointless. He started all 15 games while recording 28 groundballs and 21 caused turnovers, tied for most on team. He was twice named to Inside Lacrosse Team of the Week on March 23 and April 6.
